About Amsterdam Windmill Tour
Travel just outside the Dutch capital, and join us on our Amsterdam Windmill Tour! You’ll explore Zaanse Schans, a quaint village full of beautifully preserved Dutch windmills. We’ll also stop by several other picturesque, typical Dutch villages: Edam, Volendam, and Marken. A cheese tasting and a clog-making demonstration are also included.
The Netherlands has over 1200 windmills, and on this guided tour, you’ll see 11! Since 1961, historic windmills have been relocated to Zaanse Schans for preservation efforts. Admire their industrial beauty, and learn their huge importance in Dutch history.
During the Amsterdam Windmill Tour, you’ll also stop in Edam - a town well-known for its mild, flavorful cheese. Attend a cheese tasting at a traditional Dutch farm and sample Edam and Gouda cheeses. You’ll see why they’re famous!
13th-century Volendam is a beautiful, historic fishing town next to several polders (land reclaimed from the sea). Because of its idyllic seaside scenery, many artists moved to Volendam, and the town is home to many paintings by Dutch masters.
Your Amsterdam Windmill Tour includes a visit to Marken - a fishing village that was an island until 1957, when it was connected to the mainland by a causeway.

These aren’t any ordinary windmills
Normally when someone says windmills, I think of big, white, sterile ones. These are nothing like that! They’re old-fashioned, charming, and in a bunch of bright green and red colors. Very beautiful, and I really enjoyed our trip there. Our guide was also so nice - he took photos of my husband and me in front of De Huisman.
Very beautiful scenery on the tour
What a gorgeous tour! The windmills were so cute, and so was the rest of Zaanse Schans, all the green 17th century houses. Beautiful scenery, and we learned a lot. Our guide knew exactly what each windmill was for, explained how they work, and explained the difference between polder and industrial mills. The transportation was on time and the ride was comfortable. I’d recommend this tour to anyone!

Did you know one of the world's first industrial estates was an Amsterdam windmill complex?
The primary purpose of industrial windmills is turning raw materials into a tradeable product via pounding, mauling, hacking, etc. The windmills were extremely useful, and there even used to be a complex of sawmills on the Kostenverlorenkade in Amsterdam, considered one of the first industrial estates. Today, one windmill is still standing - the Otter.
Amsterdam's industrial tradition didn’t stop there—Heineken, one of the world’s most famous beers, began brewing here in 1864. Book your Heineken Experience tickets to discover how this local brewery became a global icon.
